I'm a New Orleans Photographer and I specialize in lush, vibrant photos with a touch of whimsy.
Fairytale kids, happy families, glamour portraits of adults, it's all here at Teena Whitmore Portraits!
Louisiana heat is no joke… but that doesn’t mean your photo session has to suffer because of it. With a little planning (and a few insider tricks), you can look effortlessly radiant—even in the middle of summer. So if you want to look your best during your summer photo session, here are 7 ways to beat the heat and still get those stunning, frame-worthy images:
I know, I know. New Orleans isn’t a morning town. But, the difference between 8am and 2pm in Louisiana is everything. (P.S. I NEVER shoot in the middle of the day outdoors and neither should you, and it has nothing to do with the heat!). Early morning light is softer, more flattering, and—most importantly—cooler. You’ll feel fresher, your skin will thank you, and your images will have a dreamy, soft glow. It will absolutely be worth one early morning. (Dress: Anna Triant Couture).

Loose hair feels romantic and dreamy, but not when it’s stuck to your face and neck in sweaty strings. Instead of fighting with it, wear it up and off your neck. No one wants to fight the frizz in New Orleans humidity. Go for an elevated ponytail, soft updo, or braids. Even a messy bun can work. Not only does it keep you cooler, it also photographs beautifully and looks intentional.

Humidity + sweat + makeup = disaster. A high-quality setting spray can save your session – it helps everything stay in place, reduces shine, and keeps you looking polished from the first shot to the last. Check out my personal favorite setting spray.
Think flowy dresses, linen, cotton, and anything that allows air to move. Avoid polyester like the plague. Structured or heavy fabrics trap heat and can make you feel uncomfortable fast. Plus, lighter fabrics move beautifully in photos and add that effortless, luxe feel. Joyfolie is one of my favorite go to shops for styling summer sessions for kids and adults. For magical summer fairy dresses for kids, I love Tutu Du Monde – stop by Peony on Magazine Street to shop in person. They also have an assortment of dreamy accessories.

Hydration shows up in your skin, your energy, and your overall glow. Drink plenty of water before your session (starting the day before) and bring a cold bottle with you. Pro tip: avoid sugary drinks right before—water will keep you feeling your best.
Summer air can be stagnant which is why I love a portable fan for summer sessions. It may not look amazing, but it can be a session-saver. When you feel the sweat starting, take a quick break and cool down with a blast of air.
If you want to skip the heat completely, a studio session is the ultimate luxury. Climate-controlled, no humidity battles, no sweating through outfits—just consistent lighting and a calm, comfortable experience where you can truly relax and enjoy your session. Also, studio sessions mean you don’t have to worry about soft lighting outside, so you can book any time of day.

The truth is, even New Orleans summer sessions can be magical. Nothing beats the golden light, vibrant colors, and unmistakable Southern glow. With the right prep, you won’t just survive the heat… you’ll shine in it.
