I'm a New Orleans Photographer and I specialize in lush, vibrant photos with a touch of whimsy.
Fairytale kids, happy families, glamour portraits of adults, it's all here at Teena Whitmore Portraits!
What’s the most popular session in my New Orleans portrait studio? Unicorns! Maybe it’s the magic of childhood, or just magic of unicorns, that inspires everyone. These sessions actually take place across the lake from me, just outside of Covington, Louisiana. I’m honored to say that I have clients travel from all over the country to come spend some time with the unicorns, and they leave with gorgeous portraits for their walls and luxurious albums full of memories. So, how do you have a spectacular and safe unicorn photo session? Its all in the planning and the details.
I take the safety of everyone very seriously, so there is a horse handler with us throughout your session. My job is to photograph you, your job is to have fun, and the handler’s job is to be responsible for the horse. The handler (usually Brandie or Bill) will have control of your magical unicorn the entire time so we can keep you safe and happy. Mom or dad is usually close by too, especially with younger children. If you see them in the photos, no worries! They will be edited out of your final images. Just like this before and after:
Trust me, nothing attracts the spectators like a princess on a unicorn, and nothing is more distracting to your experience than strangers with cell phones yelling comments to you. This is an experience you want to remember, and I want it to be perfect for you. That’s why all my unicorn sessions take place at a private equestrian center where you will have one-on-one time with the unicorn. It’s just you, your family, me, and the horse handler. And lots of space to move. So you can enjoy every minute of your fantastic and magical unicorn photo session. You can learn more about the equestrian center here.
Working with live animals can be tricky for even the most seasoned photographer. So, you have to know your animals. The Welsh ponies that are used for unicorn sessions are trained and used to being around kids of all ages. These beautiful ponies also give pony rides at many events and love to snuggles and go for a walk. They are calm, gentle, and friendly. So whether your kiddo is bubbly or shy, they can handle it.
I have been working with the same equestrian center for almost 5 years and we’ve photographed a ton of unicorns during that time. We’ve worked together long enough to have this down to a science – which keeps it stress free and fun for you! The horse handlers know what I’m looking for and I’ve learned to read the horses. Plus, I’ve built trust and bonds with both the horses and handlers. I’m not a stranger to them. So trust us – we’ve got you covered! P.S. I always bring them so apples or carrots for the end of the day).
A LOT of planning goes into these sessions. I’m constantly thinking about lighting, the time of day that will be best, locations on the property, and most of all, YOU. I am NOT a cookie cutter photographer. Your session should reflect you and your personality – you shouldn’t be rushed into a 10 minute mini session. I believe in taking time and creating magical experiences, worrying about the details, and making sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. I’ll get to know you and your family and ask about your history with horses (if you have any). I want to know what makes your heart sing. This helps me create the magical experience you are expecting and leaves you time to enjoy yourself without the worry. So, if you follow these steps, you to can have a spectacular and safe unicorn photo session!
That’s it! Keys to a successful session! Still have questions? Reach out to me here. I’m happy to answer anything you may have.
